Learning Opportunities

Quality teaching is an integral part of any residency program. For the Advocate Christ Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency, our faculty and residents incorporate this education seamlessly into their residency life. In addition to our formal curriculum and scholarly opportunities, residents participate in a variety of didactic activities including:

Teaching Rounds

Family medicine residents learn a great deal at the patient bedside, during informal discussions with other residents, attending physicians and consultants, and through self-study. Morning report on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service encourages residents and students to develop their clinical acumen by critically evaluating cases and learning key “teaching points” from patients cared for by the service.

Inpatient Lectures

In addition to rounds, residents attend numerous didactic conferences. The Family Medicine Inpatient Service features a core curriculum of lectures given by specialists and family medicine attendings. Lecture topics focus on important knowledge and skills necessary for on-call residents, such as management of chest pain, hypoxia, acute GI bleeds, sepsis, and fluids and electrolytes.

Wednesday Morning Conferences

Residents are excused from clinical duties to attend weekly Wednesday morning conferences at the Family Medicine Center – a combination of quiz-based learning sessions, faculty lectures, and visits from local and national specialty experts. Topics include:

  • Evidence-based medicine
  • Journal club
  • Resident grand rounds (scholarly and patient-centered)
  • Morbidity and mortality
  • Patient safety forums
  • Practice management

Continuing Medical Education

Residency is a period of education to become the best providers possible. We support our residents by providing:

  • An annual educational stipend
  • Educational days to attend conferences and trainings
  • CME opportunities
  • AAFP, AOA, and ACOFP memberships paid for by the program
  • True Learn Board preparation modules and other exam study resources
